Infectious disease of animals (also known as
leptospirosis), which is occasionally
transmitted to human beings, usually by
contact with water contaminated with rat
urine. It is characterized by acute fever,
and infection may spread to the liver,
kidneys, and heart. The usual form occurring
in humans is caused by a spiral-shaped
bacterium (spirochete) that is a common
parasite of rats. The condition responds
poorly to antibiotics, and death may result.
